OUTDOOR EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR / NATURALIST: A temporary, full-time position. Pay: Twice a month pay of $550-$500 plus room, board, and a sickness/accidental insurance plan. Dates: March 1 - May 30 2008.  *(In Pickens the position ends August 8, 2008)

Duties: To instruct 4-8 grade students in the four areas of the natural resource components, instruct night programs for participants, facilitate team initiatives and games, and perform other duties that are required by the Outdoor Education Coordinator that relates to the program. Specifics: Regularly teach at least two natural resource components of the core curriculum (training provided). Develop and teach at least one elective component relating to some environmental issue or personal interest. Lead students in daily program activities (wake-up, flagpole, meals, canteen, and campfire). Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled. Assist with routine clean up and set up of program areas. FALKLAND ISLANDS RESEARCH EXPEDITION: Four to six (4-6) paying participants.  Dates: December 4 – 22, 2008.

CHALLENGE COURSE FACILITATOR / ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR: Five (5) temporary, full-time positions. Pay: $9 hourly starting (possible $2 raise after training). Dates: March 7 – December 2008.

Duties: Hemlock Overlook is seeking dynamic experiential educators to maintain our level of excellence and professionalism in the delivery of high quality Experiential/Outdoor Education programs and activities; (Low and High Team Development Challenge Courses and Environmental Education Programs). As you work with a variety of clients including elementary, middle, and high-school students as well as occasional adult groups, you will develop your group management and teambuilding skills, gain knowledge of the local environment, ecology and history, have opportunities to assist with outdoor education administration including curriculum enrichment and design, and participate in paid staff trainings. Work projects for property upkeep are integral parts of this position. Responsibilities include group management, group processing, promoting transfer of experiences, and risk management as you "solo" lead a group of approximately 10-15 participants on our Team Development Course (TDC.) NATURALIST / EE INSTRUCTORS: Eight (8) temporary, full-time positions. Pay: $225 weekly plus room and board. Qual: Teaching experience is preferred but no required. Must be 18 or older.

Duties: Naturalists/Environmental Educators will teach up to 4 hands-on not lecture EE classes per day to 10-12 4th -8th graders. Their teacher or chaperone is in the class as well to help discipline and offer assistance when needed. A typical program is 3 days but River Ridge also offers 2-5 day stays, day trips and outreach to schools. Some teaching experience is preferred but not required. Environmental educators work 2-3 evening programs per week and are required to work one weekend a month with retreat groups. You must be able to lead songs at dinner, make announcements, coordinate food waste contest, collect recycling, maintain class materials, feeding animals etc. River Ridge offers about 30 classes total in 3 categories - academic, team building and outdoor recreation. We have a low and high ropes course that staff are required to teach and facilitate. River Ridge and the John Knox Center are accredited by the American Camp Association. This program is operated by the John Knox Center and run by the Presbytery of East TN.

Duties: Serve as a member of a timber sale preparation crew assisting in the completion of timber sale activities.  The job entails such presale work as marking (painting) timber, traversing (compass and chain or GPS) unit boundaries, tagging and marking unit boundaries, running field profiles for logging systems and timber cruising as well as providing support for other departments in time of need, such as fire, wildlife, fisheries and recreation.  The job requires working in all types of weather and terrain with moderate to strenuous physical demands as well as a variety of vegetation types.

SPRING TECHNICIAN: A temporary, full-time position. Pay: $10 hourly ($400 weekly). Dormitory accommodations are available on site, for a fee set by the University. Dates: begin late February/early March and continue through mid-December 2008.

Duties: During the spring and fall will include duties in the hatchery, field, and laboratory as needed.  During the summer research season, will assist Field Manager in the care and maintenance of experimental oysters being grown on the tidal flats in front of the laboratory. Duties will also include tray and bag maintenance, collection of biological data on progeny groups, and maintenance of our 75,000 gallon land based nursery and holding systems.

Qual: Qualifications include a willingness to learn, coupled with good people skills and the ability to teach about natural resources. Recent college graduates with majors in biology, environmental education, forestry, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or other related fields are preferred, although career changers and students at the junior or senior level of college are also considered. Duties: Gain experience in teaching people of all ages about the sustainability and proper management of natural resources. Duties: Share our 1,000+ acres of secluded forests, streams, waterfalls and canyons in northwest Alabama with groups of 12 students. Work with the students to foster in them a sense of community as well as an appreciation, understanding and responsibility for the environment. The students, mostly grades 4 - 8, come from a variety of backgrounds and visit out Center for 1, 3, or 5 day programs.
