NATURALIST INTERN: Ten (10) temporary, full-time positions. Pay: $275 stipend per week plus room and board. Dates: September 2008 through June 2009.

Location: San Mateo County Office of Education, La Honda, California.

Qual: Must have a strong interest in environmental education as demonstrated by previous teaching experience and/or coursework in the natural sciences. Should be flexible, enthusiastic, and enjoy working with kids. Singing and other musical talents are also useful.

Duties: During the first weeks, interns receive intensive training to prepare them for teaching environmental education classes on a variety of subjects in a variety of settings. In addition to teaching in the daytime, interns participate in evening activities that include campfires, night hikes, and folk dancing. Staff training is ongoing throughout the year, and duties will include teaching major concepts to fifth and sixth graders, enforcing safety and discipline standards, counseling students, and acting as liaison with teachers.

GENERAL SERVICE / SEA TURTLE INTERN: Three (3) temporary, full-time positions. Pay: $105 weekly and free housing. Dates: February to August 2008.

Location: Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Los Fresnos, Texas.

Qual: Experience preferred but not required.  Work conditions can involve high temperatures and humidity as well as intense sunlight in remote areas.  Must be able to walk long distances, kneel or crouch for extended periods, and carry at least 50 pounds.  Regular camping in a shared trailer may be required.  Interns will serve full time (work days may exceed 8 hours) and will receive a stipend of $105/week, free housing, free utilities, free laundry facilities, and access to free basic internet and local telephone services.  Housing will be located at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, 18 miles from South Padre Island, and will include shared sleeping quarters with 1-3 persons per room and communal kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities.  No pets are allowed.  A dependable vehicle, driver’s license, and passport are required.  It is possible (but unlikely) that some interns will be required to use their personal vehicle for commuting to beaches that are patrolled.  Sorry, but we can only accept applications from U.S. citizen

Duties: Sea Turtle Patrol/Visitor Services Internships available at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge February to August 2008.  Starting dates are flexible, but preference will be given to those available in February.  Those selected will spend February and March as a general service intern which includes duties to: staffing the Refuge Visitor Center; developing and presenting interpretive and educational materials, programs and tours; assisting with biological surveys and research such as waterfowl counts, wetland restoration and ocelot research; providing information to Refuge visitors; selling Refuge passes and bookstore items; maintaining Refuge trails, facilities and grounds; and assisting with special events, outreach, and environmental education. Then in March/April they will transition into a sea turtle patrol intern. Then part of their time will be assisting with the South Texas Sea Turtle Project and part of their time assisting with the Visitor Services and Biological programs at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.  Duties may include but not be limited to: conducting daytime patrols to detect nesting of Kemp’s ridley and other sea turtles on South Padre Island using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs); assisting with relocation of sea turtle nests; assisting with release of sea turtle hatchlings; documenting and retrieving live and dead stranded sea turtles; assisting with other Refuge biological programs; operating the Refuge Visitor Center; developing and/or presenting interpretive or educational programs and materials to the public; entering data and/or creating materials using Word, Excel, Access, or other software; conducting sales of Refuges passes and bookstore items; providing positive outreach, information, and assistance to the public.

ADIRONDACK CONSERVATION INTERNSHIP: A temporary, full-time position. Pay: $10 hourly, 35-hour work week. Dates: 10-12 weeks; May - September 2008, depending on intern's availability.

Location: Nature Conservancy - Adirondack Chapter and Adirondack Land Trust, Keene Valley, New York.

Qual: At least 18 years old; Adirondack resident or native preferred; Minimum educational background:  high school graduate, with preference for college/university students or recent graduate; Motivated self-starter, able to work independently with minimal direction; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Well-organized; Demonstrated interest in conservation issues; In good physical condition; enjoys working outdoors; comfortable handling a canoe; Experience using power tools and a chainsaw preferred but not required; Basic computer skills, including MS Word and Excel; proficiency in Arc GIS preferred but not required; Valid drivers license and clean driving record; A reliable vehicle (job requires driving throughout the Adirondack Park).

Duties: Lead Project:  Under the supervision of the Director of Communications, update the Chapter’s website.  Research and draft content, and select images and video, while following TNC’s visual identity, writing and website formatting guidelines. (2-3 weeks). Communications and Marketing:  Assist the Director of Communications with preparing outreach, fundraising, educational, marketing and other materials for various audiences, including members, donors and the media.  Assist in drafting and issuing press releases.  Time permitting, help update brochures for one or more preserves.  (2+  weeks) Fundraising:  Assist Philanthropy staff with all aspects of fundraising trips and special events, particularly in support of our Heart of the Adirondacks project, including logistics, donor relations, and producing informational materials.  Assist with one or more member field trips, and with the Annual Membership Meeting and Field Day logistics.  (1-2 weeks) Threat Abatement:  Assist the Invasive Species Project Coordinator with the control and monitoring of invasive plants at our preserves and at ecologically critical sites within the Adirondack Park.  Directly assist with plant identification and rapid assessment and controls for infestations within APA jurisdictional wetlands, NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation Forest Preserve, and NYS Dept. of Transportation rights-of-way.  (2 weeks) Stewardship:  Assist the Land Stewardship Coordinator with maintenance work at our nature preserves throughout the Adirondack Park; visit those properties periodically to help with local outreach, and to document and take care of problems like illegal dumping of trash. Time permitting, update maps of conservation easements.  (2 weeks) Conservation Science:  Assist the Conservation Scientist with ongoing science projects.  Priority projects may include a state-wide aquatic connectivity analysis or the development of forest health and monitoring measures.  (1 week) Debrief:   Maintain a journal documenting your experiences as an intern, and debrief with staff at the end of the summer. (Up to 1 week) General:  The intern will work closely with many members of the staff, and will report directly to the Director of Communications.  In addition to the listed duties, there may be clerical and other work as needed and as our summer work priorities evolve, as special opportunities arise, and as the intern’s interests dictate.  Work will be both in the office – attending meetings, working on the computer, etc. – and in the field.  The intern is expected to work independently as well as with colleagues, members and donors, partners, and media representatives.  Field work will be in all sorts of weather, sometimes in remote locations with rugged terrain. Additional Training Opportunities: The intern will be exposed to a broad range of educational opportunities during the course of the summer field season.  These may include learning about alpine plant identification and our efforts to protect sensitive alpine habitats, training sessions in identification of invasive plant species, accompanying our consulting ecologists in their field work, as well as meeting the inspirational conservationists who founded this program.  Interning with a global conservation organization will broaden the selected candidate’s knowledge of worldwide conservation issues and strategies for addressing threats to biodiversity.

NATURALIST INTERN: A temporary, full-time position. Pay: $190 weekly plus Room and Board. Dates: August 25, 2008 to June 6, 2009.

Location: Dunes Learning Center, Chesterton, Indiana.

Qual: Required: BA/BS in Natural Sciences, Biology, Education, Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Resource or Heritage Interpretation, Outdoor or Environmental Education, or related field. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and hike several miles over hilly dunes terrain while carrying a 25-lb backpack. Great independent worker and team player. Possess valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation (car, bike, etc). Desired: Prior experience in classroom teaching, outdoor education, residential camp setting, nature centers, or day camps. Lifesaving and water safety certification.

Duties: Dunes Learning Center (DLC) is a residential education facility within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore that works in close partnership with the National Park Service (NPS). Naturalist Interns are key members of the program staff at the DLC. Naturalist Interns will develop their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills and techniques. They will instruct children and adults regarding the diversity of ecosystems, plants and animals, and cultural history of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and southern Lake Michigan region. Specifics: Present DLC programs in natural and cultural history, inquiry-based science, and resource stewardship for children and adults; primarily students in grades 4-12. Lead half-day and day-long educational/interpretive hikes on Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore trails. Assist in the design of customized environmental education programs for students. FIELD RESEARCH INTERNS: Temporary, full-time positions. Pay: $10 hourly. On-site dormitory housing is available for approximately $300 per month. Dates: Most positions run from June through August, but some interns are needed as early as March and some are needed through December 2008.

Duties: As a research intern, you will contribute to ongoing field experiments, have the opportunity to initiate individual research, attend scientific presentations, and interact with professors, post-docs, and graduate students. Most of the research positions will focus on plant community ecology. A few positions focusing on either soil hydrology, wildlife biology, environmental education, scientific writing, or botany will also be available. Cedar Creek research examines ecological processes occurring at the individual physiological level to the ecosystem level in response to a variety of climate change scenarios including elevated CO2, increased temperature, increased nitrogen deposition, and altered precipitation patterns; land management practices including prescribed burning, biofuel harvesting, and agricultural production; and varied land use histories. SEABIRD INTERN: A temporary full-time position. Pay: $2500 plus housing and utilities. Dates: April 1 - June 31, 2008.

Location: Santee Coastal Reserve near McClellanville, South Carolina.

Qual: B.S. in a biological science or coursework toward same; seabird and shorebird ID skills helpful. Must be able to lift 50 + pounds.

Duties: Assist ongoing efforts of Audubon South Carolina and SC Dept. of Nat. Resources to monitor, post, and protect three critical Important Bird Areas' (IBA) seabird nesting colonies and critical seabird species. NATURALIST INTERN: Two (2) temporary, full-time positions. Pay: A monthly stipend and free housing onsite are provided. Dates: March 31 - October 31, 2008. Duties: The International Crane Foundation (ICF) is a leader in the conservation of the world’s 15 species of cranes and the habitats upon which they depend. Qual: Required: Excellent presentation skills; Excellent customer service skills; Experience working with children or adults in an educational setting; Familiarity with A Sand County Almanac; Interest in learning more about the biographical details of Leopold’s life and his family’s time at the Shack; Dynamic personality; Ability to work independently; Multitasking skills; Well-developed communication skills; Flexibility and leadership ability; Ability to work flexible hours during work week of Tuesday – Saturday, including some evening hours. Duties: Every year, visitors to the Leopold Shack are inspired by some of the earliest land restoration efforts in our nation’s history by reveling in the simplicity and beauty of the world famous “refuge from too much modernity,” the Shack. In April 2007, we opened the Leopold Legacy Center, an educational and interpretive facility near the Leopold Shack. It has recently been rated as the greenest building in the world by the U.S. Green Building Council, and is also one of the first buildings to be designated “carbon neutral.” The Education and Visitor Services interns will frequently lead both formal and informal tours of the green building components of the Legacy Center in addition to tours at the Shack. We believe that on-site educational programs are one of the most powerful tools available to us to make an impression on visitors, inspiring each person to develop their own personal land ethic. Help us impart this important message to our growing pool of visitors from all over the world! Specifics: Act as primary guide for interpretive tours of the historic Leopold Shack and Farm, and the green-built Aldo Leopold Legacy Center. Targeted audiences include conservation professionals, land owners and managers, the general public/Sauk county tourists, high school/college students, and a small number of local middle school students. Staff the information desk and bookstore at the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center every Wednesday – Saturday. Tasks include welcoming visitors and orienting them to guided and self guided tour options, answering questions about the Leopold Foundation, and ringing up sales/balancing the cash register daily. Act as primary support staff for meeting rental groups in the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center. Tasks include room setup and cleanup, presentation equipment setup and troubleshooting, dish clearing, and some catering support. Provide logistical assistance for large events at the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center periodically throughout the year. Assist in gathering and compiling visitor evaluation data. Support land stewardship staff during burn season and garlic mustard season. Take on several other projects/focus areas from a list of targeted needs. Specifics: Resource Educators at Yaquina Head may find themselves exploring tidepools with elementary school students, describing the migration of gray whales as they swim past, answering questions about the area at the site’s interpretive center, and greeting visitors at the fee collection booth, or guiding visitors into the past within Oregon’s tallest lighthouse while in costume. SPRING SEASON: Approximately 6000 elementary students visit Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area during April, May, and June each year. During the spring, with the guidance of the Chief Park Ranger and Education Coordinator, the Resource Educators will: Instruct grade-specific intertidal ecology programs for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students.
