GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE: Two (2) half-time graduate student assistantships. Pay: In addition to stipend, benefits include tuition waiver (up to 6 hours per semester) and student health insurance. Dates: Tentative starting date June 1, 2008.

Duties: Two graduate student research positions (Ph.D. or M.S.) are available to study rangeland ecosystem ecology.  In many rangeland ecosystems, the belowground population of plant meristems (the bud bank) plays a primary role in plant population dynamics, species diversity, stability, and resistance to invasion.  Our project will test hypotheses on environmental factors regulating bud bank dynamics and their ecological consequences in rangelands across the Great Plains.  This research is funded through USDA collaborative funding with Kansas State University (D.C. Hartnett).

SENIOR RESEARCH SPECIALIST: A permanent, full-time position. Pay: $2,250 - $2,606 monthly commensurate with education/experience. Full benefits apply.

Location:  Department of Natural Resource Ecology & Management, Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Qual: B.S. in Range Science, Ecology, or related discipline and 1 year related experience is required.  M.S. in Range Science, Ecology, or related discipline and 1 to 2 years related experience is preferred.

Duties:  Collection of field data and application of experimental treatments. Responsible for recruiting and supervising field crews assigned to data collection and application of experimental treatments. Data collection responsibilities include numerous field studies, some of which are on large, remote tracts of land. There is responsibility for working with station superintendents and other employees to apply experimental treatments including those with grazing, herbicides and fire. Assumes responsibility for data quality assurance and exercises independent judgment to schedule and complete research obligations, including grants, contracts and graduate student research. Responsible for participating in, preparing for, and conducting research programs and tours on research stations. Sample processing and analysis. Responsible for processing research samples and data including computer data entry, statistical summaries/analyses, interpretation, and reports. Responsible for supervising other employees in routine sample and data processing tasks. Remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). Responsible for ground-truthing remotely sensed data, photo- and satellite imagery interpretation, and computer processing of data to include supervising graduate students and assisting project cooperating scientists in interpreting data and GIS and GPS operation. Maintenance and inventory of research equipment and machinery. Utilizes good judgment and planning skills in purchasing and maintaining certain kinds of machinery (e.g. chain saws, fire pumps) and equipment (e.g. soil probes, electronic data recorders, GPS, and fire equipment). This position will make recommendations to project leader on major equipment purchases and assumes responsibility for purchasing minor equipment and supplies. On occasion, this position is responsible for designing and fabricating or contracting the fabrication of research equipment.

PROFESSOR and DEPARTMENT HEAD – BIOSYTEMS ENGINEERING AND SOIL SCIENCE: Position No. X0732. A 12-month, full-time appointment. Dates: Start July 1, 2008. Screening of applicants begins January 30, 2008 and continues until the position is filled.

Qual: The successful candidate must qualify for the rank of professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering and   Soil Science with an earned doctoral degree in Biosystems/agricultural engineering, or soil science, or other closely related     field. In addition, the candidate must have the following: Evidence of exceptional academic achievements including extramural funding, as well as the demonstration of effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills; Experience with teaching, research, and/or Extension programs at a land grant university, and understanding of and commitment to excellence for all three functions; Experience in assessing priorities and adapting a changing environment creativity and innovation; Demonstrated commitment to maintaining and expanding diversity and knowledge of equal employment opportunity and affirmative actions, in the department and university community.
