INTERPRETIVE NATURALIST: A temporary, full-time position. Pay: $24,000 - $28,000.

Location: Des Moines County Conservation, Starr’s Cave Nature Center, Burlington, Iowa.

Qual: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental education, interpretation, natural sciences, natural resources, and/or outdoor recreation. Experience in public speaking, a valid Iowa driver’s license, and a willingness to work weekend, evening, and irregular hours are also required. Duties: Our at-risk programs work with children who have been termed status offenders (status offenses are things such as truancy, behavior problems, breaking of school policies). We have locations in Aiken and Summerton, SC, which feature canoeing, camping, low and high adventure courses, and many recreation sites. The programs work with 30-45 kids per site; and offer a maximum of a 1 to 8 instructor to student ratio. Students stay in the program from 3 months to 9 months. The program will focus on many curriculum areas including:  environmental education, technology, aerospace, chemical science, high adventure, automotives, food and nutrition, horticulture, health care, marine science, electricity, and animal science, just to name a few. We also encourage staff to help design curriculum in which they have knowledge. Staff will have great work schedules, and there will be many chances to pick up trainings and add to their ability. Specifics: Scheduling, supervising, and coordinating activities at the center. Provide teaching, crisis intervention, and orientation of new juveniles, and serves as a treatment team member. Performs administrative duties to include oral or written reports. Assigns and supervises duties and activities of volunteers; make community contacts as needed. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR: Program No. 95ADNOR0050001-103. A temporary, full-time position. Pay: Members will gain extensive teaching experience in an outdoor and indoor classroom focusing on environmental issues and concerns. The primary audience is 5th and 6th grade students with many opportunities to network with the general public. An on-site resource library is available to members wishing to gain further knowledge on teaching skills or other topics of personal interest. Specialized training will be scheduled on prescribed burning, chainsaw safety, first aid, and possibly the safe use of an ATV. A taxable, monthly living allowance (before taxes, approximately $1000). Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of $4,725. Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable). Duties: Will conduct environmental education programs for students and adults at the MacKenzie Center, conduct programs for special-education students, develop and pilot programs related to the State Natural Areas, create interpretive materials and signs, develop an invasive plant species management plan, plan and conduct on-site workshops for landowners, teachers, and other adults, organize volunteer work crews to assist with the removal of invasive plant species, and maintain the native prairie plots at the MacKenzie Center. Specifics: This position will work with other staff and volunteer educators to provide classroom and outdoor activities to middle school students participating in the residential program or visiting on a field trip. Typical programs are animal tracking, orienteering, stream study, bird adaptations, nature hikes, and a variety of forestry-related topics. Training will be provided on all activities. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:45 until 4:30pm. Some weekend or evening work is also required. This position is supervised, and is responsible to, the program director. We are looking for a creative and motivated individual with an undergraduate degree in the environmental field, two years of teaching experience in a nature center or residential center setting, a strong background in wildlife, experience with birds of prey and an understanding of sustainable systems and education for sustainability.

Duties: During the school year instruction takes place Monday - Friday, 9-4 at our nature center, other outreach sites or local schools. During the summer there are 4 - one week camp programs coordinated and run by our instructional staff. Duties: Our at-risk programs work with children who have been termed status offenders (status offenses are things such as truancy, behavior

problems, breaking of school policies). We have locations in Aiken and Summerton, SC, which feature canoeing, camping, low and high

adventure courses, and many recreation sites. The programs work with 30-45 kids per site; and offer a maximum of a 1 to 8 instructor to student

ratio. Students stay in the program from 3 months to 9 months. The program will focus on many curriculum areas including: environmental

education, technology, aerospace, chemical science, high adventure, automotives, food and nutrition, horticulture, health care, marine science,

electricity, and animal science, just to name a few. We also encourage staff to help design curriculum in which they have knowledge. Staff will

have great work schedules, and there will be many chances to pick up trainings and add to their ability. Specifics: Scheduling, supervising, and

coordinating activities at the center. Provide teaching, crisis intervention, and orientation of new juveniles, and serves as a treatment team

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR: Program No. 95ADNOR0050001-103. A temporary, full-time position. Pay: Members will gain

extensive teaching experience in an outdoor and indoor classroom focusing on environmental issues and concerns. The primary audience is 5th

and 6th grade students with many opportunities to network with the general public. An on-site resource library is available to members wishing

to gain further knowledge on teaching skills or other topics of personal interest. Specialized training will be scheduled on prescribed burning,

chainsaw safety, first aid, and possibly the safe use of an ATV. A taxable, monthly living allowance (before taxes, approximately $1000). Upon

successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of $4,725. Loan forbearance (after successful

plant species management plan, plan and conduct on-site workshops for landowners, teachers, and other adults, organize volunteer work crews to

assist with the removal of invasive plant species, and maintain the native prairie plots at the MacKenzie Center. Specifics: This position will work

with other staff and volunteer educators to provide classroom and outdoor activities to middle school students participating in the residential

program or visiting on a field trip. Typical programs are animal tracking, orienteering, stream study, bird adaptations, nature hikes, and a variety

elective component relating to some environmental issue or personal interest. Lead students in daily program activities (wake-up, flagpole, meals,

canteen, and campfire). Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as

scheduled. Assist with routine clean up and set up of program areas. Perform direct supervision of children while involved with activities.
