FARM ENERGY SPECIALIST: A permanent, full-time position. Pay: $25,000 - $36,000.

Location: National Center for Appropriate Technology, Butte, Montana.

Qual: NCAT is a mission driven organization and the successful candidate must be fully supportive of its mission.  Demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting sustainable agriculture is required.  Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, writing and proposal development are very important in this position.  Must be able to travel. This is an excellent opportunity for the ideal candidate with a combination of education and experience in engineering as it relates to agriculture. Minimum requirements include farm-based experience with a background in engineering, energy efficiency or a related field in agriculture. A BS or MS degree or equivalent in one of these fields is also required. The qualified candidate must have a demonstrated interest in farm energy or bioenergy.  

Duties: NCAT is looking for someone who wants to use his/her engineering or agriculture education and experience to assist American farmers who are adapting to new energy challenges and opportunities.  You will work directly with farmers to address their questions on how to make their farms more energy efficient and how to develop renewable energy potential on the farm.  This is a regular, full-time position providing an excellent opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional staff on national projects. The position will be based in an NCAT regional office in Iowa, Pennsylvania or Arkansas. Specifics:  Conduct energy audits on farms, analyzing farm operations to make them more energy efficient. Conduct workshops and training related to farm energy. Evaluate the renewable energy resources on farms, including solar, wind and potential biofuel feedstocks. Design and evaluate small scale processing equipment. Work directly with farmers and farm groups to provide information on farm energy topics. Research technical information on farm energy efficiencies, energy cropping systems, and farm processing equipment. Prepare publications, topical summaries, bibliographies, workshop materials and website postings for audiences with varying degrees of technical knowledge. Communicate via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate information to farmers. Work with other sustainable agriculture specialists to identify farmer needs and appropriate delivery methods. Assist in project development activities. CONSERVATION PLAN AND IMPLEMENTATION SPECIALIST: Announcement No. LEFW8002. A permanent, full-time position. Pay: $4,754 - $7,000 monthly.

Duties: Serve as co-lead for the department regarding ESA Recovery Planning, including the following functions:  (1) key coordination role with the Governor’s Natural Resource Office; (2) key role coordinating collaborative work with NOAA Fisheries, the States of Washington and Idaho, Tribal co-managers, other state and local agencies, and Stakeholder Teams. Serve as a key member of Oregon and the department’s ESA Recovery Team (ERT), consisting of senior science, technical and policy staff from Fish Division and affected regions throughout ESA Recovery Domains across Oregon. Serve in key role monitoring Oregon’s progress developing Recovery Plans, effectively recommending adjustments to schedules and commitments, and monitoring products for timely delivery of Recovery Plans consistent with standards negotiated between the State and NOAA Fisheries. Resolve science and technical challenges through analysis, facilitation, and mediation among department regions, districts, and divisions to assure successful implementation of department commitments regarding fish and habitat restoration, monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management.  Periodically review the department’s broad range of conservation and restoration commitments for consistency with the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. Effectively direct and coordinate efforts within department divisions, regions, and districts to collect and analyze data and produce progress reports on implementing restoration and monitoring plans. Represent the department on the Oregon Plan Implementation Team. Serve as the department’s liaison to the Independent Multidisciplinary Science Team. Function as a key member of the Conservation and Recovery Team; critically evaluate alternative interpretations of scientific data, assess implications of alternative policies, resolve internal agency interpretations of science and policy, and effectively recommend department position and policy strategies in all areas of personal and professional proficiency. Respond verbally and in writing to letters, phone calls, and other inquiries related to areas of expertise, often on topics of great significance to Oregon and department policy. Qual: 6 years of experience in supervision, staff-technical, or professional level work in natural resources management. This experience must have included at least 2 years of supervision and management of a program, section, or unit that included: a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation.  A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent course work (144 quarter or 96 semester hours) in a field related to management, such as Business or Public Administration, or Wildlife or Fisheries Science or a related natural resources field, may be substituted for up to three years of the required experience, but will not substitute for the 2 years of specialized experience. WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN: A temporary, full-time position. Pay: $10.50 - $12.00 hourly. Dates: April 1 – October 1, 2008 with some flexibility.

Duties: The Green River Corridor Project seeking one seasonal employee to fill wildlife technician position at Browns Park Waterfowl Management Area in northeast corner of UT near CO border. Position is for approximately six months from early April to early October. Starting and ending dates are somewhat flexible. Ability to follow/give instructions from/to colleagues. Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather. Required to pass moderate level pack test. Duties: The Assistant Land Steward participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. During the field season the Assistant Land Steward will serve as crew leader for a 10 person volunteer intern crew and participate in crew orientation and safety training.  This will include one or more of the following functions: Assist Land Steward with preserve maintenance. Assist with monitoring and research. Removes exotic species and/or species monitoring. Prescribed burns assistance and training. Maintain tools and equipment. Responsible for crew safety. Duties: This Basin Educator plays a lead role in developing the capacity for watershed and ecosystem-based educational programs that protect and improve local land and water resources. The Educator fosters and facilitates stakeholder involvement in developing natural resources conservation strategies for the Basin. The Educator helps citizens, agencies, and local governments identify, develop and implement educational activities in area communities. This position operates in cooperation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) – Forestry, Land, Water, and Customer Assistance and Employee Services (CAES) Divisions.  This collaboration focuses on the development and delivery of basin-specific education strategies and programs that address priorities identified by WDNR, local citizens and community decision-makers, and other resource management partners.
