Duties: Assist the Fort Wainwright Natural Resources coordinator with the execution of a wetlands management program.  Implement wetland delineation surveys in urban and remote settings.  Develop hydrologic studies for aid in jurisdictional determination.  Develop a wetland map of Fort Wainwright using on the ground survey techniques, remote sensing applications and other available technologies.  Work closely with Army Corps of Engineers Regulatory office and other local agencies in regards to wetlands issues.  Supervise a seasonal delineation crew.  Assist with natural resources management programs, military training site inspections, environmental education programs, and other conservation programs as needed.

Duties: The desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is federally listed as a threatened species north and west of the Colorado River under the Endangered Species Act. In summer 2005, the Southern Nevada Complex fires burned over 597,000 acres in southern Lincoln County, NV, including almost 225,500 acres of desert tortoise habitat. The goals of this work are to assess the quality of desert tortoise habitat through habitat modeling and vegetation sampling in burned and unburned areas, and to determine densities of desert tortoises in Lincoln County through line distance sampling. The Project Coordinator will oversee all aspects of field operations, including personnel, implementation of field protocols, data collection and quality assurance, equipment maintenance and usage, and other logistics. Detailed oversight of vegetation sampling will be an important focus of the Project Coordinator. Personnel oversight will be focused on as many as four two-person teams of vegetation sampling technicians, and will include supervision of a GIS specialist and some supervision of as many as four two-person teams of line distance sampling technicians. Responsibilities will include participation in field training; scheduling; supervision of field sampling and sample processing (especially for vegetation studies); data compilation, management and reporting; coordination with GBI and agency staff; and management of equipment, vehicles and materials.

Duties: The person selected for these positions will serve as a Fish Biologist within the fisheries division of medium-sized Fish and Wildlife Office in Red Bluff, California. The person selected will oversee various biological monitoring and/or habitat assessment/monitoring for purposes related to (but not limited to) watershed restoration activities, legislatively mandated biological monitoring, Federal water projects, and evaluation of Federal fish hatcheries. Specific: Develop investigation plans and conduct fishery cooperative investigations and studies on anadromous salmonids and other species of the Sacramento River basin, which include the determination of life history characteristics, population size, exploitation rate, distribution and migration, and fish habitat requirements necessary for survival. Analyze proposed fishery resources project plans, determine the financial needs of the project and prepare recommendations for budgetary requirements of equipment, material, and personnel. Duties: Assists the Project Leader complete objectives of the Elk-Livestock Studies, the Elk Nutrition Predation Studies, and future studies being developed.  Specifics: Gather/acquire data from field studies, literature review, and on-line searches; Summarize and analyze data using statistical software such as SAS or equivalent; Interpret data analysis; Write manuscripts suitable for publication; and Present results at public and professional meetings.  Provide statistical analysis of long-term data sets on elk pregnancy rates, body fat, lactation rates, seasonal precipitation and temperature, elk recruitment, and other statistics and prepare written summary of analysis. Work with team of wildlife biologists and managers to revise elk habitat effectiveness models to be used in forest plans by analyzing resource selection functions of elk and coordinating with U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) GIS Specialists to develop software that can be used to map and analyze management alternatives on elk habitat. Administer protocols established in study plan to examine effects of archery hunting on reproductive parameters of cow elk at Starkey Experimental Forest and Range to coordinate and prepare final report; coordinate sample collections from elk and mule deer for disease monitoring; work with USFS staff to ensure data collection needs are met; coordinate activities with Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR); and participate in outreach by giving tours of Starkey and making presentations of research to appropriate public and professional groups. Assist to complete objectives of study to examine interaction of nutrition and predation on elk recruitment by coordinating with ODFW district biologists and population lab to obtain samples and maintain records of elk nutritional condition, lactation, pregnancy, and age information; coordinate field activities in one study site to estimate causes of calf mortality and to determine survival rates; coordinate frequency of radio collars placed on elk and cougars to ensure that all frequencies are uniquely identifiable; participate in flights to determine animal locations using radio telemetry; provide analysis of survival data of calf elk; and participate in capture of elk and deer in traps or from helicopter and cougars with use of hounds.
