NATURAL AREAS COORDINATOR: A permanent, full-time position.

Location: Milwaukee County Parks, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Qual: Bachelor’s degree in natural resources management, ecology, environmental science, conservation biology, restoration ecology or related field. Two years experience in managing natural resources. Knowledge of upper Midwest ecological systems. Experience with invasive species control. Experience working with governmental agencies. Demonstrated leadership experience. Experience working with volunteers. Ability to organize work and work independently. Strong written and oral communication skills. Preferred: Master’s or equivalent degree in natural resources management, ecology, environmental science, conservation biology, restoration ecology or related field. Grant writing experience. Three to five years experience in managing natural resources. Experience with mapping and GIS. Experience working with the media.

Duties: Jointly supervised by the Milwaukee County Parks Department and the University of Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX) as an academic staff member, the Natural Areas Coordinator will oversee the management of the natural resource base of the Milwaukee County Park System and provide educational programs on natural area management for Milwaukee County Parks employees, volunteers, students, and the general public. The natural resources to be managed include a variety of ecosystems — woodlands, wetlands, grasslands, streams and ponds (riparian areas). Assume weekly travel throughout the county and occasional travel within the state. Work evenings on a regular basis and occasionally on weekends, as needed to meet local needs. NR PARKS SPECIALIST INTERMEDIATE: Posting No. 07DNR000711. A permanent, full-time position. Pay: $ 17.01 - $ 24.71 hourly, $ 35,517 - $ 51,594 annually.

Location: MN Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks & Recreation,  Park Rapids, Minnesota.

Qual: Bachelors or Masters degree in one of the following life science or physical science fields: biology, botany, conservation biology, ecology, entomology, forestry, restoration ecology, wildlife, zoology, geology, soil science, or equivalent; AND 1 year professional experience in the protection, restoration and management of natural resources including developing and implementing resource management plans for natural areas, directing personnel, budgeting and project coordination. Employees of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) may substitute the above degree and experience requirements with 2 years professional experience in the protection, restoration and management of natural resources as described above. Applicants who meet the above education and experience requirements will be further evaluated on their experience and/or training in the following four areas: Field Resource Management, Project Planning and Coordination, Leadership, and Communication Skills. Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the a gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds. Requires occasionally lifting and carrying objects over 50 pounds. Involves steady walking for distances up to three miles. Involves sitting for long periods of time and pushing and pulling of foot and hand controls of vehicles and equipment. Involves work outdoors under inclement weather and environmental conditions including seasonally extreme temperatures and precipitation. Work includes, but is not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.

Duties: This position works out of Itasca State Park and is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating natural and cultural resource management programs at Itasca, Zippel Bay, Hayes Lake and Franz Jevne State Parks and Garden Island and Big Bog State Recreation Areas. This position is responsible for direct field implementation of resource projects, policies and plans. The incumbent must be physically able to direct, implement and participate in prescribed burns, pesticide applications, seed collection and other resource management tasks. This position may also represent the Division as liaison between other Department divisions, state agencies, non-governmental organizations, private contractors and the general public in matters concerning resource management. This position works closely with the park managers and cooperatively with the Regional Resource Specialist.
