LAND
Location: Camphill
Soltane,
Qual:
Land and Estate Crew Leader: Must have 2-5 years of work experience, a degree
in a related field, or other technical training in the area of land work,
estate care, or gardening. Experience with organic gardening or biodynamic
gardening is highly preferred. Land and Estate Crew Assistant: Must have some
prior experience with land work, estate care, or gardening. Both positions:
Must be at least 21 years old, in good physical and emotional health, and must
be able to speak and read English well. The Soltane
Seminar for Social Healing is offered to all first-year coworkers. You may attain college credits by completing
required readings and assignments - see our website for details. Training is
also available in biodynamics for both the Land and Estate
Manager and assistants.
Duties: We have positions
available for both a Land and Estate Manager, and for assistants to the land
crew. Manage our 50-acre estate. Our estate includes over 200 fruit trees
(apples and some peaches), an acre of berry bushes, a
1/4 acre vegetable garden with 14 raised beds, 7 beef cows, and lawns and
meadows. The land crew also makes compost, rakes leaves, maintains gardens,
prepares firewood, burns brush, clears snow, and maintains fences and pathways
in the community. All land work is done using organic, and often biodynamic,
methods. The Land and Estate Manager will be responsible for having an overview
of the land care needs on campus, and organizing and working with crews of 5-7
people, including students and community members with disabilities. Assistants
will be members of the land crew. The Land and Estate Crew meets
approximately five times per week, 2-3 hours per session. The Land and Estate
Manager will also have planning and reporting responsibilities. Our organization
is a Camphill community which provides continuing
education for young adults with intellectual disabilities in a community
setting. All support staff ("coworkers") live on campus in households
with other coworkers and people with disabilities. The Land and Estate Manager
and assistant positions are also coworker positions, so your role would include
other areas beyond landwork. We would expect that 50%
of your time would go towards land work, and 50% of your time would go towards
general coworking in a household. As a member of a
household, you would be living with other coworkers and with students or
community members with disabilities. You would be providing direct care support
to one or two students or community members with disabilities, and participating
in general household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and basic maintenance.
You would be asked to provide emotional and social support for the people with
disabilities, and actively support their well-being. Camphill
Soltane, like other Camphill
communities, has its spiritual foundation in Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy.
Among other things, this manifests itself through care and attention for the
seasons and major festivals throughout the year, and an emphasis on sustainable
living.
