The Educational Rights and Privacy Act of l974 restricts third party access to your records.  A prospective employer cannot obtain information about your records at the Academy unless you give it to the employer personally or unless you give written authorization to certain designated administrators at the Academy to release such information from your files.

Any work performed outside of the classroom improves the students’ marketability to potential employers. We recommend each student get as much work experience as possible prior to graduation.

Career Services assistance at the Academy is available to you on a completely voluntary basis.  It is your decision as to whether or not you utilize these services.

A.  INTERVIEWING SCHEDULES AND APPOINTMENTS:

All students are encouraged to attend all group presentations by recruiters, but only those seniors or graduate students with a sincere interest in learning about a company should sign the interview sheet after the presentation.  Sign up sheets for the presentation are encouraged to see how much student interest there is for a particular company.

A resume and (as requested) a transcript may be necessary for an interview.  Be sure to be prepared and bring the requested documents to your interview  along with any other credentials you may want presented to an employer, i.e. evaluation from cadet shipping, campus employment, or shore-side co-op experiences.

Students who fail to appear for an interview appointment may lose the privilege of making future interview appointments with other recruiters.

Students are responsible for obtaining approval to be absent from class or other Academy requirements from the instructors and/or officers/staff affected by the interviewing schedule.

 B.     Alumni and Recent Graduates:

After graduation, you are encouraged to keep in touch with the Career Services office as long as you require assistance or to inform the Career Services Office of any possible employment opportunities for future graduates and classmates.  Calls should be made during normal business hours (8:00 am to 4:30 pm EST) on weekdays using the number: (207) 326-4311 extension 276 or dial direct (207) 326-2276.

The Career Services Office has assisted in helping alumni find new careers, afloat and ashore, in many diverse occupational fields.  Many alumni subscribe to the Career Services Job Bulletin Web Site (www.mmajobs.com) which is updated daily and lists employers that have communicated their employment needs to the Career Services office or have advertised in various newspapers or professional journals.

Alumni and enrolled students are encouraged to review the web site listings for:

 1. Current employment trends
 2. Phone numbers and addresses of potential employers
 3. Names of contact people for obtaining specific information
 4. Identifying alumni for employment networking purposes

(Students currently enrolled may also obtain a User ID and Password from the Career Services Office.)

The majority of alumni subscribers are employed but they often like to know what types of employment opportunities are coming into the Academy. Cyclical and seasonal employment demands as well as a general pulse of the industry can be valuable information in the strategy of obtaining the right job.  Many times alumni and their families prefer to live or work in certain geographical areas and have found the website to be a useful tool.

In a competitive job market, persistence in job search efforts and communication with other alumni and the Career Services Office is of paramount importance.
