          ELIGIBILITY FOR CADET SHIPPING ASSIGNMENTS

Students must have completed one training ship (T/V STATE OF MAINE) cruise (CR-103) and two years at the Academy.  The cadet shipping (sophomore) cruise is designated as cd/ce 203 (4 credits).  It is a prerequisite for the junior cruise designated as cd/ce 303.  This will require students transferred from other college institutions and enrolled as sophomores to complete cd/ce 303 after graduation.  Issuance of U.S. Coast Guard licenses in such cases will be withheld until the 180/360-day sea time requirement is satisfied.

The Academy can and will assign students to the training ship T/V STATE OF MAINE for the second of three training cruises if:

1.        There are an insufficient number of training billets to accommodate the entire class.

2.      The student requests to be assigned to there.

3.      A student has a disciplinary, academic and/or medical problem.

4.      For any other reason deemed important by the Academy administration.

CADET SHIPPING IS A PRIVILEGE; NOT A RIGHT

The cadet shipping training program is offered on the basis of training billet availability and student compliance with the academic and disciplinary standards of Maine Maritime Academy.

The Academy does not guarantee that a cadet shipping billet will be available to each student.  Ship operators are not required by law or regulation to provide cadet billets for students attending state maritime academies.  They do so on a completely voluntary basis and with great expense.
